Lumina vs FOLIO · 025.04

FOLIO is a powerful, modular platform with excellent electronic-resource management and consortia support. It is also heavy to host and academic in its bias. Lumina is lighter, single-deployment and built for working libraries of every size.

FOLIO

What FOLIO does best

Open source microservices platform (EBSCO ecosystem)

  • Modular apps with an OpenAPI description for every module
  • Fine-grained permission sets and a circulation rules engine
  • Bulk edit and data import profiles
  • ERM with COUNTER, course reserves, a linked data editor
  • Consortia tenants

Rough edges, as reviewers describe them

  • Heavy to host and operate
  • An academic bias and complex UX
  • No events or room booking
  • Little adoption in India

Lumina

Where Lumina differs

  • A keyboard-first desk with a three-state answer and a reason for every block
  • Staff and member mobile apps, and a guard-only gate check
  • Events, room booking and a modern public catalogue
  • INR fines, Razorpay and UPI, Hindi and English
  • A guided report builder and 34 built-in reports

Where Lumina is behind

  • A new product (version 0.1.0), not a mature community
  • SIP2, Z39.50/SRU, OAI-PMH, NCIP, EDIFACT, RFID and plugins are planned, not built
  • Consortium features and UNIMARC are not there yet

Choose FOLIO if

  • You are a research university with serious ERM and consortia needs
  • You have a team to run a microservices platform
  • You want to build on its extension ecosystem

Choose Lumina if

  • You want one deployment you can understand: a NestJS API, Postgres and a web app
  • You serve schools, colleges or public libraries as well as academic ones
  • You want events, rooms, mobile apps and a Koha import
Moving from FOLIO? Lumina has no dedicated FOLIO importer. Records and patrons can come in through MARC and patron imports.
Is Lumina as modular as FOLIO?

Lumina is a modular monolith: 30 feature modules in one API with a documented REST surface of 723 endpoints. It is easier to host than a microservices platform, and less extensible by third parties; there is no plugin system yet.

Coming from Koha instead? See the migration plan or compare with Koha.
